Boxing on Film –
What do you do when you have 3 frames left on a roll of film? Test the film and lighting at a boxing match!
I had the opportunity to shoot a few boxing nights over the past 2 years thanks to a friend photojournalist who invited me to join him. I always shot them digitally mainly because the lighting is so bad and the sport is a very fast one. The last boxing night was held at a new venue with better lighting so I took the opportunity to finish off a roll of Tri X. The roll was shot at ASA 400 but for the boxing bout I metered at EI 800. This way the background goes black, reducing the distractions while also lowering the highlight hotspots. Even though i did not manage to capture the right moments the over all quality is very good. Will shoot a couple of rolls at the next fight night and print a couple.
